Welcome to Week 1 of our farm journal series, where we dive into the daily rhythms and unexpected twists of life on the land. Here’s a snapshot of the adventures we’ve encountered:

As our week began
A surprising 4-inch blanket of heavy snow draped our fields. It served as a reminder that nature operates on its schedule, often diverging from our meticulously laid plans. The snowfall brought our spraying and seeding activities to a temporary halt. While some dared to sow peas, venturing into wheat fields seemed a daunting task amidst the wintry conditions
Looking ahead
The weather forecast paints a picture of more challenges to come. Rain is predicted for next week, particularly on Monday and Tuesday, threatening to further delay our seeding efforts. Despite the looming uncertainty, a few brave peas have found their way into the soil, beginning their journey toward germination. However, wheat fields remain untouched, patiently awaiting their turn. With ground temperatures averaging around 3°C, progress is slow but steady.
On the vegetation front

Signs of life are emerging. Volunteer canola has started to peek through the soil, signalling the beginning of another growing season. While perennials like dande lions and thistles stand resilient, other weeds remain relatively dormant for now.
Amidst these fluctuations, a farmer’s words echo in our minds: “We thought it was going to be an early season.” This sentiment encapsulates the unpredictability that defines our livelihood.
As we embark on this journey together, let’s embrace each twist and turn with open arms. Week 1 has reminded us of the resilience that lies at the heart of farming.
Here’s to the start of a new chapter, filled with challenges, triumphs, an d the ever – present beauty of nature.
Warm regards,
Jesse Erickson
