Dear Farmers,

Welcome to Week 3 of our farm journal series. This week has been characterized by steady
progress and a constant reminder to remain patient as we work towards our planting goals.

Here’s a look at the highlights and challenges we faced:

Soil- Canola Trial

Weather and Soil Conditions

Last week was predominantly dry, with only a few “spits” or light rain events. The dry weather allowed us to make significant strides in our seeding activities. Despite this progress, the soil temperatures have remained cool, hovering around 7-9°C. This coolness has caused wheat to take about a week to emerge, reminding us that patience is key.

Seeding Progress

Wheat seeding is well underway, with over 70% of the fields now seeded. It’s a promising start, even if the cool soil temperatures are slowing the emergence process. In the midst of this, weeds are beginning to make their presence known. The emergence of weeds in our soil has made the decision for preburn treatments straightforwardan easy decision that should already be second nature to us.

Canola and New Decisions

Some farmers have started planting canola, while others are contemplating the use of floaters to enhance their seeding strategies. This diversification in planting activities is a testament to our adaptability and willingness to explore different methods to ensure a successful season.

Encouraging Patience

Throughout this seeding month, I find myself frequently reminding farmers that there is still plenty of time to get everything in the soil. The anticipation of an early start has given way to the reality of a more measured pace, but this should not deter our optimism. Each seed sown is a step closer to the harvest we envision.

Soil- Larrys Emerging Peas

As we continue through this season, let’s keep encouraging each other and sharing our progress. Together, we can navigate the challenges and celebrate the successes that define our farming journey.

Warm regards,

Jesse Erickson
