Dear Farmers,

Welcome to Week 5 of our farm journal series. This week began with the promise of sunshine and favorable conditions for canola, providing a much-needed boost to our seeding efforts. Here’s a recap of our progress and the challenges we’ve encountered:

Canola - Quad

Weather and Field Conditions

The week started on a high note, with lots of sunshine in the forecast. However, we experienced a few spotty showers that caused some delays in operations. Despite these minor interruptions, many farms made significant progress in their seeding activities.

Seeding Progress

This week saw a substantial catch-up in seeding. EA acres progressed from 62% seeded over the weekend to 74% by Friday morning. With a strong final push, we’re optimistic about reaching the finish line soon.

Canola Trials

We’re excited to report that our canola trials have been planted, including Liberty Link, Roundup, and a combination of Liberty and Roundup for the “Best of the Best” trial. A big thank you to Naslunds and TJ O’Donnell for their contributions to these trials.

Wind Conditions

The beginning of the week was calm with no wind, allowing for smooth operations. However, the last two days have been quite windy, presenting new challenges.

Weed Emergence and Soil Temperatures

On the weed front, volunteer canola is emerging steadily. Wild oats are still taking their time, with the most advanced plants at the 2-leaf stage. Broadleaf weeds have also begun to emerge. Soil temperatures have increased to around 14°C, creating more favorable conditions for crop growth and weed emergence.

Crop Stages

Here are the most advanced stages of our crops as of now:

• Canola: Emerging
• Barley: 2-leaf stage
• Wheat: 2-leaf stage
• Peas: 3-node stage

Looking Ahead

With the later seedings, this year promises to be good for weed control, as more weeds should emerge by the time we begin spraying.

As we approach the final stretch of our seeding season, let’s stay focused and continue supporting each other. The progress we’ve made this week is encouraging, and with a bit more effort and favorable weather, we’re well on our way to a successful season.

Warm regards,

Jesse Erickson
