RoundUp Ready Canola
2021 – O’Donnell Land & Cattle – East of Rosalind, AB
Seeding
May 18
105 lbs NH3 + starter blend
Bourgault 65 ft, 10″ spacing
With an open spring, TJ was able to seed the cereals quickly and moved onto canola mid May. TJ was tied up this day, so Cory Lohr ran the tractor and seeded. The AC in the tractor was not working for the majority of the day.
A HUGE thank you to TJ O’Donnell for putting in this trial, and Cory Lohr for seeding it
An equally HUGE thank you to the suppliers of canola seed: Cory Lohr (Pioneer, 4 bags), Mark Hagen (Brett Young, 1 bag), and Shelby Patey (Dekalb, 2 bags/1 variety).
A smaller, but equally heartfelt, thank you to Derek Friend (Nutrien/Proven, 1 bag) for giving a good deal.
Scouting
1st pass: Glyphosate 180 gai/ac
2nd pass: Glyphosate 180 gai/ac
Weekly scouts were completed on this trial once seeding was done and until spraying was finished. This field was sprayed with 0.5 REL glyphosate, twice. Below are some scouting notes:
- Cotyledon/emerging across all varieties (June 1)
- First and second leaves poking out. Flea beetle feeding across all varieties, but nothing major. All varieties are about the same stage (June 7)
- DK98 is the furthest ahead. DK98 20% bloom, 45CM39 15% bloom, 45H42 10% bloom, 44H44 10% bloom, 45H37 10% bloom, BY6207 and PV581 are the furthest behind and still bolting (July 2)
- BY6207 is the tallest and nicest looking variety so far. PV581 and BY6207 flowered mostly after the heat wave, vs the other varieties flowered heavily in the heat (July 12)
Harvest
September 21 – North/Tough
September 25 – South/Dry

TJ cut around an ideal area, where the land was relatively flat and all the varieties looked at their best. It ended up being 1.59 acres per variety.
We started with the north half of the replicated trial. After taking off a couple varieties, it was evident it was a bit too wet. We still took off the rest of the north varieties to keep things the same.
A few days later things had dried off significantly. We took off the south varieties.
Weights were recorded using a grain cart with scale.
*Centre blend poor yield can be attributed to several pockets with minimal germination.
